The Six Sines Harmonic Collection explores the meeting of Renaissance timbre and a distinctly modern method of synthesis.
Six Sines is built around six interacting sources, with phase modulation, digital ring modulation, FM and other forms of audio-rate modulation providing the means by which simple waveforms may become remarkably complex.
Rather than treating the synthesiser merely as a machine for conventional electronic sounds, this collection uses its harmonic architecture to pursue instrumental colours: strings, reeds, winds, voices, bells, sustained tones and other sounds belonging to the Neo-Renaissance vocabulary.
The result is deliberately varied. Some sounds remain close to the clarity of their harmonic foundations; others become increasingly synthetic as the modulation is pushed further.
Six Sines is not the easiest instrument to programme, and that is part of the reason for making this collection. The presets provide useful instruments to play immediately, whilst also giving a practical starting point for studying how the synthesiser’s unusual architecture may be used.
