Dexed Sound Studies takes the instruments of the Neo-Renaissance project into the precise and sometimes unforgiving world of FM synthesis.
The collection is distributed as Dexed SysEx material, including a dedicated Dexed Sound Studies bank alongside additional cartridges and sounds.
FM synthesis is particularly well suited to the study of harmonic structure. Small changes to the relationships between operators can transform a sound from a clear pitched tone into something metallic, vocal, bell-like, wooden or entirely unfamiliar.
The collection therefore treats each instrument as a study in harmonic construction.
Strings, winds, voices, bells and other instrumental ideas are rebuilt through operators rather than samples, allowing them to retain the immediacy and precision of a synthesiser.
These sounds may be used directly in a composition, or opened up as examples of how FM synthesis can be employed beyond its familiar electric-piano and eighties vocabulary.
