Vital Sound Studies is an extensive collection of sounds made in the course of exploring what a modern wavetable synthesiser can do with an old musical vocabulary.
The collection contains dedicated Neo-Renaissance instruments including choir, cittern, clavichord, cornett, crumhorn, dulcian, fiddle, handbells, harpsichord, hurdy-gurdy, lute, organ, rebec, recorder, sackbut, theorbo, viol consort, virginal and other instrumental colours.
Alongside these are drones, percussion, synthetic instruments, effects, unusual textures and sounds which deliberately depart from their historical starting points.
The word Studies is intentional. These are experiments in timbre as much as they are finished sounds.
Some are recognisable instruments. Some are distorted impressions of instruments. Others are simply consequences of following a sound somewhere interesting.
Vital makes it possible to move quickly between these worlds, making this collection useful for composition, sound design, ambient music, electronic production and anyone wishing to explore the border between acoustic memory and electronic synthesis.
